Alice In Wonderland is a classic book series that was written by Lewis Carol between the years of 1865 and 1889.

How Many Alice In Wonderland Books Are There?

The first two books became so popular and they were eventually adapted into feature-length films such as Disney’s animated “Alice In Wonderland” and Tim Burton’s live-action “Alice In Wonderland”, which also spawned a sequel “Alice Through The Looking Glass”.

Most people know of the first two books “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through The Looking Glass, And What Alice Found There”, but how many books are actually in the Alice In Wonderland book series?

Well, let’s look into it!

What Is Alice In Wonderland About?

The first book “Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland” follows the main protagonist, Alice, as she quite literally falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world filled with anthropomorphic animals and terrific creatures.

“Through The Looking Glass, And What Alice Found There” picks up a few years after the first book and follows Alice’s return to Wonderland, where she has to deal with the whole world being mirrored.

It brings back some of the characters from the first book and also introduces new ones.

The series is known for its surreal and quite psychedelic elements, both in what is described and the way Carol writes the stories.

The whole of the Alice In Wonderland series is known for its use of “literacy nonsense”, using lots of gibberish and riddles to confuse and entice the reader to want to know more.

Alice in Wonderland has inspired and been the basis of many other pop culture things, ranging from movies to games, to music.

Because the books are so popular, they have never actually been out of print and have been translated into over 174 languages.

How Many Alice In Wonderland Books Are There?

There are two main books in the Alice in Wonderland book series as well as two extra “books” you can read.

The two most well-known and popular books are “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, which is the first book, and its sequel, “Through The Looking Glass, And What Alice Found There”.

These are the two main books in the series.

The other two “books” that are regarded as part of the Alice in Wonderland series are “The Wasp In A Wig” which was published in 1877 and “The Nursey” which was published in 1889.

The first book follows the story of Alice as falls down a rabbit hole into Wonderland.

She meets a wide variety of trippy characters such as The White Rabbit, The Chesire Cat, The Hatter, and The Queen of Hearts.

“Through The Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There” is the sequel to the first book and follows an older Alice as she returns to Wonderland, this time by climbing through a mirror.

When she gets there, she discovers that everything is reversed, and this includes logic.

She reunites with characters from the first book, such as The Hatter, and meets new characters such as Tweedledum and Tweedledee and the antagonistic Red Queen.

“The Wasp In A Wig” comes from a scene within “Through The Looking Glass” that Carol chose to remove from the original story.

It depicts an encounter Alice has with a Wasp that is wearing a wig, hence the name.

It was a missing chapter/scene for quite a while, but you can now widely get hold of it to read for yourself.

Though it is not technically a book but more of a chapter/scene, it is still a part of the Alice In Wonderland series, so should be counted in the overall question of “how many Alice In Wonderland books are there?”.

“The Nursey” is an abridged version of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” that was adapted by Carol for children between the ages of naught to five.

It also includes some of the original illustrations from the book by John Tenniel that have been redrawn, enlarged, and colored for the intended audience.

This version of the first book is great for children, both to be read for them and for them to read themselves.

Another interesting thing about “The Nursey” is that it’s written as if the story is already being read aloud to someone and includes a lot of interpolations written by Carol that point out details in the pictures and drawings and ask the person listening questions.

So if you want a more interactive and different way of reading the classic novel, “The Nursey” will take you on quite a journey!

There are a few other additions to this version of the book, so if you do get the chance to read it, you should definitely give it a try.

What Order Should You Read The Alice In Wonderland Books?

Because “The Wasp In A Wig” and “The Nursey” are technically not a part of the main series, you can read the first two novels in order and that would be fine.

If you really want to stick to the chronological order down to the letter though, you’d be looking at this order:

  • The Nursey & Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland (You don’t have to read both versions, but you can if you’d like to!)
  • Through The Looking Glass, And What Alice Found There
  • The Wasp In A Wig (To really stick to the chronological order, you would need to read “The Wasp In A Wig” you need to read it after Chapter 8, which features the White Knight)

Conclusion

So, whereas there are technically only two books in the Alice In Wonderland series, there are two extra pieces of material you’ll want to include for a full “Wonderland” experience.

The inclusion of “The Wasp In A Wig” chapter is necessary to the overall story, but it just offers the reader more insight into the wonderful and bizarre world of Alice and her Wonderland.

“The Nursey” is a great addition to involve children or anyone curious about the mind of Lewis Carol, so if you do get the opportunity to read both as well as the original novels, you definitely should!
