Young Adult Fantasy and Science Fiction novels got a huge spike in popularity thanks to the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. But they aren’t the only two in the genre that is available to readers.

First published in 2015, The Red Queen series is a popular young adult fantasy series written by Victoria Aveyard. It follows the story of 17-year-old Mare Barrow.

How Many Books Are In The Red Queen Series

The thing that might confuse readers from the get-go though is that there are a few books in the series and if you want to read them in order, it might get a bit confusing.

So read on to find out exactly how many books are in this series and what the correct order for reading them is.

What Is The Red Queen Series About?

Set in a fantasy world, The Red Queen series centers around different social classes, where the color of your blood dictates your status.

If you are born with red blood, then you are considered low class and a commoner, but if you’re born with silver blood, you are considered high class, royal, and also possess special powers.

The Red Queen series follows the story of 17-year-old protagonist Mare Barrow. She is a “red” who lives with her mother, father, and younger sister and she has three brothers who are off fighting on the front lines of a war between the Reds and the Silvers.

Anyone who is 18 must join the war, so Mare is waiting for her 18th birthday when she too must join the fight.

However, Mare ends up having to work for the King and during this time, she discovers that although she is a Red, she herself actually has powers, which shouldn’t be possible.

Mare is then thrown into the world of the Silvers, and she ends up falling in love with the King’s oldest son, Cal while being betrothed to his younger brother, Maven, which of course causes even more complications.

The story then follows Mare’s adventures as she deals with this love triangle and the ongoing war between the Reds and Silvers.

How Many Books Are There In The Red Queen Series?

So how many books are there in the series? Well, in short, the answer is 6, but there’s a little more to it than that because there are technically 7.

You have the main series and then two/three novellas. We’ll take a little look into them here!

Main Books

The main series consists of four books that follow the adventures and story of Mare Barrow. The four books in the main series are:

Red Queen

The Red Queen serves as the first book in the series. It follows Mare Barrow as she becomes employed by the King and discovers that although she is a Red, she has powers, specifically electrokinetic powers that allow her to absorb or release lighting.

Mare is thrown into the “Silvers” world, where she is betrothed to the King’s younger son, Maven, but she falls in love with his eldest son, Cal instead.

Glass Sword

Glass Sword picks up after the events of Red Queen. Mare Barrow discovers that she isn’t the only Red who has powers.

She is pursued by the new king, Maven, and she goes on a journey to find other Reds and Silvers who will join her in the fight against those who oppress her.

King’s Cage

In King’s Cage, Mare Barrow is struggling with her powers and is imprisoned by Maven. While she is imprisoned, the group of Reds and Silvers she banded together continue to train and prepare for the war.

But the group learns that they can no longer live in the shadows, and they must reveal themselves to everyone in order to succeed.

War Storm

In the final book of the main series, Mare Barrow is dealing with a heartbreaking betrayal and decides once and for all that she needs to overthrow the Kingdom of Norta, by taking the crown from Maven.

But the road to this goal isn’t easy, and she has to learn to trust those who have betrayed her and work with them, as well as her group of Reds and Silvers to fufil her goal.

Novellas

There are two novellas that are part of the series too. They are:

Queen’s Song

Queen’s Song follows the story of Queen Coriane, the first wife of King Tiberias, in the form of her own personal diary.

She tells the reader about different parts of her life, which include her courtship, the birth of Prince Cal, and the challenges that come with her new royal life.

Steel Scars

Steel Scars follows the story of Captain Farley as she exchanges coded transmissions with the resistance. The story follows Captain Farley as she attempts to recruit various people into the resistance to attack the capital.

The story shows how much of a challenge starting the rebellion is, but it also shows how Captain Farley comes across a connection she wasn’t expecting in the form of Mare Barrow.

Broken Throne

Broken Throne is more of a collection, that features both Queen’s Song and Steel Scars, as well as a collection of maps, flags, family trees, bonus scenes, journal entries, and more, all of which haven’t been seen before in other entries in the series.

What Order Should You Read The Series In?

If you are determined to read everything chronologically, then you have to follow this order:

  1. Queen’s Song
  2. Steel Scars
  3. Red Queen
  4. Glass Sword
  5. King’s Cage
  6. War Storm
  7. Broken Throne (optional)

Conclusion

If you’re looking to start reading The Red Queen series and you want to do it chronologically, then you’ll be looking at 6 books in total to read. That’s the four main books and the two novellas.

Broken Throne is just a collection that features both novellas and tonnes of extras, so if those extras interest you, it’ll be in your best interest to purchase this version!

Though the novellas aren’t necessary for you to dive into the world of the Red Queen series, they definitely offer you more insight into the overall world.
