Jacob Black is one of the main characters throughout the entire Twilight franchise.
He progressed from being a minor character in the first book/movie to becoming one of the series’ three main characters, alongside Bella Swan and Edward Cullen.
How old was Jacob throughout the Twilight series? Did he continue to age following his transformation from human to werewolf?
In this article, we will find out how old Jacob was, and whether he continued to grow older following the events that took place in ‘New Moon’.
Does Jacob Age?
According to the books in the Twilight Saga, Jacob Black was born on January 14th, 1992.
He continued to grow up normally, and in the first book of the series and the first movie of the franchise, ‘Twilight’, Jacob seems to be a typical teenager.
Jacob doesn’t have a major role in the first book/movie, and his main relevancy to the plot is when he plants the seeds into Bella’s head that Edward, and his family, could be vampires.
This is due to the Quileute legends that Jacob heard from his family and friends growing up.
However, his life changes during the events of the second book and movie, ‘New Moon’. Jacob learns that he is part of a lineage of Quileute shape-shifters, and he finds this out when he transforms and develops the ability to shift into a werewolf.
According to the novels, a child from the Quileute tribe’s direct bloodline typically undergoes the metamorphosis from human to shape-shifter when he reaches manhood, or maturity.
He is then accompanied by a two-month-long growth spurt.
Once that growth spurt has aged, the boy may remain the age that he was when he first transformed. The only way a shape-shifter can age is if he refrains from phasing (becoming a ‘werewolf’) for a long period of time.
Jacob was 16 when he first converted from human to shape-shifter, and he had a significant physical transformation at this time.
Jacob is days away from turning 17 at the end of the series (‘Breaking Dawn’), but his appearance and genetics cause him to appear to be in his mid-twenties.
So, it can be tricky to work out if Jacob still ages after his transformation. Technically, he aged several years during his transformation, and then he stopped aging altogether.
If Jacob were to refrain from phasing for a long period of time, he would begin to age normally again.
However, it is uncertain that he would decide to do that, especially since he imprinted on Renesmee in ‘Breaking Dawn’, and expressed desire to want to wait for her to reach his age.
Since Renesmee, unlike Jacob, develops and grows at a rapid speed, she would likely reach the same age as him within a few years of the end of ‘Breaking Dawn.’
Jacob’s Age Throughout The Twilight Saga
As we briefly mentioned earlier, Jacob was born in January 1990. From this information, we will work out how old he was during each novel of the Twilight Saga.
Twilight
The first novel of the Twilight Saga, ‘Twilight’, begins with Bella Swan moving to Forks to live with her dad. This is estimated to have taken place in January 2005, when Bella was 17 (Bella was born on September 13th, 1987).
In January 2005, Jacob would have just turned 15.
New Moon
The second novel, ‘New Moon’, begins on Bella’s 18th birthday. So, at this point in the series, around nine months have passed since the very beginning of the first book.
Jacob would have been 15 at the start of ‘New Moon,’ but four months had passed by the time Bella started hanging out with him after Edward’s departure, during the first half of the novel. In the Twilight timeline, this would put us in January 2006.
When we first start regularly seeing Jacob in the series, he would have just turned 16 years old.
However, it is around a month later (February 2006) that Jacob shows signs that he is going through his transformation from human to shape-shifter.
Once he has finished this transformation, he technically stops aging.
Eclipse
The third novel of the series, ‘Eclipse’, takes place in the Spring of 2005, a week or two after the Cullens’ return to Forks. There are only a couple of days between the end of ‘New Moon’ and the start of ‘Eclipse’.
The final battle between the Cullens’, the werewolves, and the newborn vampires created by Victoria takes place during June 2006. This means that Jacob remains 16 years old throughout the entirety of ‘Eclipse’.
Breaking Dawn
The final novel, ‘Breaking Dawn’, begins around a month after the events at the end of ‘Eclipse’ took place. Edward and Bella get married in August 2006, and Renesmee is born on September 10th, 2006.
After the full events of ‘Breaking Dawn’ have taken place, the series officially ends on January 1st, 2007, with the climatic final battle having taking place on New Year’s Eve, 2006.
The Twilight series came to an official close just 13 days before Jacob’s 17th birthday.
How Old Is Taylor Lautner?
In the movie adaptations of the Twilight series, Jacob Black was played by Taylor Lautner. Lautner was born on February 11th, 1992.
This makes Lautner around two years and one month younger than Jacob in the books.
Lautner was only 15 years old when the first Twilight movie was filmed, and 16 years old when it was officially released. This made him the same as that Jacob would have been in the first novel.
He was 19 years old when the final movie of the Twilight franchise – ‘Breaking Dawn Part II’ – was released.
Final Thoughts
The Twilight series takes place over the course of two years, almost exactly. It began in January 2005, and concluded on New Year’s Day, 2007.
Jacob had only just turned 15 when the series began, and would have turned 17 a couple of days following the series’ conclusion. So, throughout the entirety of the franchise, Jacob was aged 15/16 years old.
However, due to his metamorphosis from human to shape-shifter in February 2006, it’s plausible to believe Jacob remained 16 years old for several years after the end of the series.
