Naruto is a Japanese manga written by Masashi Kishimoto and published by Shueisha.
Well, that is what we will be answering in this article as we take a look at how many volumes this epic tale spans.
The Story Of Naruto
Naruto follows the story of the titular protagonist, Naruto Uzumaki who is a ninja with supernatural powers.
These powers were granted to him by the fourth Hokage of his village, who imbued him with the spirit of the Nine Tails when he was a baby.
Over the course of the series, Naruto strives to become the hokage (leader) of the Hidden Leaf village, so he can earn the respect of his peers and protect against all dangers.
The story is split into two parts, with the first half focusing on Naruto as a child and the second on his life as a teenager and young man.
The story of Naruto is told in chapters which feature in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump magazine. There are over 700 chapters in total, which are also available in bound volumes called tankōbon.
The very first chapter was published in issue 43 of Shonen Jump which came out back in 1999.
There is also an English version of this manga which was published by Viz media to appear in the American version of Shonen Jump.
How Many Tankōbon Are There?
As we said above, Naruto is split into two parts with the first part consisting of 244 chapters arranged into 27 tankōbon volumes.
There are an additional 466 chapters in the second part, which are contained within 45 tankōbon volumes.
As such the whole story spans a total of 700 chapters with 72 books needed to own all of them.
This is no small amount of literature. So if you plan to collect physical copies of this manga, then you will need to have a lot of room on your shelf.
How Long Did Naruto Run For?
Naruto started in 1999, although the first tankōbon volume was released in March 2000. The series carried on for several years, cementing itself as one of the longest running and most popular manga series.
However, like all good things, Naruto eventually came to an end with the final tankōbon volume being released in February 2015.
Back in April 2009, Shueisha also reprinted the entirety of part one to be contained within a single 9-volume sōshūhen.
This allowed many fans to easily find the beginning of this legendary story, making it much more accessible than it was beforehand.
How Many Episodes Of The Anime Are There?
Many fans will know of Naruto primarily through the anime that was made to accompany it.
There are two anime series tied to this franchise, the first of which is simply called Naruto, which recounts the plot of part one.
The second series is called Naruto Shippunden which covers the plot of part two up until the end of the story.
Many fans will have first encountered Naruto through either the subtitled version, or dub of this anime.
The first anime aired its pilot episode on the 3rd of October 2002, and ran up until February 8th 2007.
During this time, Viz Media worked together with Pierrot and TV Tokyo to produce 220 episodes detailing Naruto’s adventures as a child.
Viz Media only started airing the English version of this series in September 2005 on Cartoon Network. At the time, CN had a special slot for anime called Toonami.
Even after this block was removed from the schedule, Cartoon Network continued to air Naruto due to popular demand.
Naruto: Shippunden, much like the manga it is based on, is set 2 and a half years after the events of the first series. This series first aired in Japan February 15th 2007, shortly after the final episode of Naruto.
Viz media worked with Crunchyroll to provide English dubs for each episode, until the series officially aired in American on Disney XD in 2009.
Naruto: Shippunden lasted for 500 episodes, with the final installment airing on March 23rd, 2017. As such, the whole anime series including both parts spanned roughly 720 episodes, which is more than the number of chapters in the manga.
Naruto Spin-Offs
The Naruto manga spawned several spin-offs including a sequel to the final chapter called ‘Naruto: The Seventh Hokage and the Scarlet Spring.’
There is also a separate series about Naruto’s son called ‘Boruto: Naruto Next Generations’, which is preceded by a one off manga titled ‘Naruto: The Path Lit by the Full Moon.’
‘Rock Lee’s Springtime of Youth Full-Power Ninja Chronicles’ is another spin off that features some breakout characters from the manga, but not Naruto himself.
This series garnered its own fan base and eventually its own anime as well. ‘Naruto: Chibi Sasuke’s Sharingan Legend’ is the sequel to this spin off that also got its own anime.
