The Twilight Saga is one of the most popular book series in the world. Even before it was turned into a film series, the books alone had a massive fan base and it is no wonder why.

There are a lot of characters in the series, and of course, the vast majority of the characters are vampires. But who is the oldest vampire in the Twilight saga?

You might instantly think it is Aro, the leader of the Volturi, but you might be surprised to know that neither he nor any of the rest of the Volturi are the oldest vampires in the saga!

So who is? Well, read on to find out!

The Oldest Vampire In Twilight

So if none of the Volturi take the top spot for the oldest vampire in the saga, who actually is? Well, the answer is Amun.

We are introduced to Amun quite late into the Twilight Saga in the final book, Breaking Dawn.

Amun is one of Carlise’s friends who he brings back to Forks to act as a witness against the Volturi when Bella and Edward are trying to convince them that their daughter, Renesmee, is not an “immortal child”.

Amun is the leader of the Egyptian Coven, whose members also include Tia and Benjamin.

Benjamin is one of the series’ vampires who has a gift- he is able to control and manipulate the four elements.

Amun is the oldest vampire in the whole series, but his exact age is unknown. What we do know is that he was born sometime in 2500 B.C.

Unfortunately, most of his history is shrouded in mystery.

We do not know exactly when he was turned or his actual age, we just know that he is the oldest vampire we are made aware of in the entire Twilight Saga.

Other Really Old Vampires In The Saga

Though Amun is the oldest vampire in the whole saga, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some other really old vampires that we meet.

When you look at the ages of some of these vampires, they make Edward Cullen look like an infant, even though he’s over 100 years old himself.

Though they are not as old as Amun, here are some of the other oldest vampires we meet throughout the series.

Aro

Aro is one of the three leaders of the ruling vampire coven, the Volturi, but he is widely recognized as the overall official leader of the coven.

He has the gift of tactile telepathy, which allows him to read any thought or memory that someone has, just by touching them.

Aro was born around 1340 B.C in Greece and he was changed into a vampire in 1300 B.C, making him incredibly old by the time we meet him with Bella at the end of New Moon.

Caius

Caius is another of the three leaders of the Volturi. Of the three leaders of the Volturi, Caius is known to be the most ruthless and unforgiving.

A fun fact about Caius that is briefly mentioned during the Saga is that he was nearly killed by a werewolf once and that drove him to hunt them to near extinction.

This is also why he hates werewolves so much. Caius was born in 1300 B.C, like Aro, and changed around the same time, making them extremely close in age.

Marcus

Marcus is the last of the three leaders of the Volturi.

He isn’t as ruthless or cunning as Caius and Aro and he only really stays with the coven because he is being compelled to stay by one of the other members, under the command of Aro.

Marcus has the gift of relationship identification which allows him to see and sense the emotional bonds and ties between others.

This gift is one of the main reasons Aro keeps him from leaving the Volturi.

Marcus was born around 1350 B.C and he was turned into a vampire not too long after that.

Making him ever so slightly younger than Aro and Caius, but still extremely old in the saga.

Stefan & Vladimir

Stefan and Vladimir are two of the founding members of the Romanian coven, which is one of the oldest vampire covens in the whole series.

We don’t meet Stefan and Vladimir until after Bella’s change in Breaking Dawn, where they come to the Cullen’s house in Forks to confront the Volturi.

Stefan and Vladimir have a strong hate and vendetta against the Volturi because the Romanian coven was once the ruling vampire coven, but the Volturi took this status from them and destroyed a huge portion of their coven.

Their main drive in life is to destroy the Volturi and regain their power.

Both Stefan and Vladamir were born and turned before 1000 B.C, making them at least 300 years older than the three leaders of the Volturi and second only to Amun.

Carlise Cullen

Carlise is the patriarch of the Cullen family and the leader of the Olympic coven.

We are introduced to Carlise pretty early on in Twilight when he checks Bella after she’s almost hit by a car.

He is the adoptive father of Edward Cullen and the rest of his siblings and the husband and mate of Esme Cullen.

Carlisle was born sometime in 1640 in London, England and he was turned in 1663.

Though he isn’t anywhere near as old as the Volturi or the Romanian coven, he’s still one of the older vampires we come into regular contact with throughout the series.

Conclusion

Aside from the main characters in the Twilight Saga, most of the other vampires we meet are shrouded in mystery regarding their past and how they came to be vampires in the first place.

As far as all Twihards are aware though, there is not another vampire mentioned in the series that is older than Amun, so if anyone ever asks you who the oldest vampire in the books is, you can tell them with confidence!
