The Harry Potter books were a global phenomenon that at the time were heralded as encouraging a whole generation of children to read.
This series consisted of seven books detailing the adventures of ‘the boy who lived’ and how he rose to defeat Lord Voldemort.
However, just because the main series has ended, doesn’t mean that there isn’t more to this story.
Since finishing the Deathly Hallows, J.K Rowling has returned to her classic work to add new spin-offs, prequels and even a sequel.
These works flesh out the magical world of Harry Potter and give a closer look at the history behind the events of the main books.
One of the more popular spin-offs of this franchise is the Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them series, which has spawned its own set of movies.
If you have seen the films and know more about the literary background to this series, then you have come to the right place.
In this guide, we will be covering how many Fantastic Beasts books there are and what they are called, so you can add them to your reading list.
How Many ‘Fantastic Beast’ Books Are There?
‘Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them’, isn’t the name of a series but rather a stand-alone book written by J.K Rowling.
This book was meant to act as an in universe guide book to the various magical creatures that inhabited Rowling’s world.
As such, it is not really a story and more of a fake textbook designed to flesh out the world and provide some background lore for hardcore Harry Potter fans.
The first edition of this guide book was published in 2001. There are even notes in the book which are meant to be written by the main characters of the series, Harry, Ron and Hermione, providing extra insight into the beast described within.
So this book does not mark the first entry to a series, and doesn’t actually have that much of a plot since it is a collection of descriptions about mythical creatures.
The Film
In 2016, Rowling’s fictional textbook was chosen to be adapted into a film of the same name. The fictitious author of the book Newt Scaramander acted as the main character of this film and was played by Eddy Redmayne.
During the film, we see Scaramander as a Magizoologist trying to hunt down several escaped magical creatures in the city of New York.
During the course of the plot, viewers encounter many of the magical creatures described in Rowling’s original book, while getting more context on the wizarding world and how it operates outside Hogwarts.
This film marks the first part of a series that contains two more entries so far. Both of the film’s sequels follow Newt Scaramander in a prequel to Harry Potter that explores the backstory of Dumbledore and other characters.
Are There Books For The Other Fantastic Beast Films?
The first Fantastic Beasts film is more inspired by rather than based on the book of the same name. It is followed by two films called ‘The Crimes of Grindelwald’ and ‘The Secrets Of Dumbledore’.
The script for both of these films were written by Rowling herself and later released in paper-back books. However, these books are just the scripts for their respective films and not stand-alone works of literature in their own right.
You can often buy the books as a box set that comes with a play that Rowling wrote as a sequel to the main Harry Potter franchise, ‘Harry Potter And The Cursed Child’.
The ‘Cursed Child’ is often sold in two parts due to its length, and as such, a box set of books for the Fantastic Beasts series often contains between 3 and 5 books.
However, it should be noted that two of these books are not related to the film series, and are merely bundled with the other entries. Furthermore, only one of the books is an actual book while the other two are film scripts.
Are There More Fantastic Beasts Films To Come?
The Fantastic Beasts film series was always intended to be at least a trilogy, however in 2016 it was announced that the series would contain five films in total.
However, the third film in the series, released in 2022 did not do as well as the producers had hoped it might.
This was due to a wide range of issues such as the Covid-19 pandemic, recasting of the main actors and a lukewarm reception to ‘The Crimes of Grindelwald’.
Because of all of these various issues, the film only just made its budget back and became the lowest grossing film ever set in Rowling’s wizarding world.
The poor response to the third movie has made Warner Bros uncertain about the prospect of funding a fourth. As such, work has yet to begin on the next film in this series, and it may never be released if WB don’t want it to be.
Are There Any More Books To Adapt
No, since the original ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ was not a proper book but rather a fictional textbook, there are no more books to adapt in this series.
The second and third entries of the film series are not based on any books, and have since raised the stakes of the originals’ story to tie in with the main Harry Potter series.
As such, there are no Fantastic Beasts books that you can read while you are waiting for the fourth movie to come out.

There is still a chance for Fantastic Beasts 4, but while you are waiting, you can check out any of the books we have mentioned in this article.
It is important to manage your expectations, though, as only one of the books in this series is a standalone book, and it doesn’t even have a plot.
As such, if you are looking for books that match the plot of the films, you may be somewhat disappointed to find only a fictional textbook and two scripts.
