How Many Boxcar Children Books Are There?

These books can be found in classrooms and homes across the United States of America and continue to remain popular choices for educators and parents alike thanks to their format and language.

If you want to find out more about these gorgeous children’s books and how many of them there are then keep reading below!

About The Boxcar Children’s Books

The Boxcar Children’s Books were the creation of Gertrude Chandler Warner who was a primary school teacher and wrote the books due to the lack of entertaining books that were available for students just learning to read in 1920s America.

The first book was published in 1924 and a rewrite of this initial story was published in 1942 which was the official first installment for this expansive series of books.

The books follow the story of four main characters, the Alden children, Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny, and their lives after being left orphaned and creating a home in an abandoned boxcar.

The children take care of themselves and also solve mysteries together, classic whodunits that can be wrapped within each book.

Eventually, the story follows the story of the children reuniting with their Grandfather who preserves their boxcar in his garden while also taking responsibility for the children and caring for them.

Warner had wondered herself what it would be like to live in a freight train’s box car and that was the initial inspiration behind this hugely popular children’s books series that she dreamt up and wrote.

She would read drafts of the stories in her classroom to ensure they held students’ attention and that it was easy to understand for children.

The books are aimed at a reading audience of children between eight to ten years of age, or in Grade 2 to 6.

This age group will be able to read the book but there are some themes that may not be appropriate for younger children and so parents should read the book to ensure it is suitable for their child.

Warner passed in 1979 and the book series was left in limbo for a number of years before a new installment was released under Warner’s name in 1991.

This book was written by a ghostwriter who was hired by the series publisher, Scholastic.

Multiple books have been published each year since 1991 right up to 2019 when the most recent installment was published.

The books continue to prove popular, particularly within the school system in America.

How Many Boxcar Children Books There Are

At the time of writing, there are more than 160 books in The Boxcar Children series, 19 of which were written by their creator, Warner. The remaining books include books written by ghostwriters under Garner’s name.

There have also been 21 Boxcar Children Specials published since 1993 and a mini-series was also published in 2017, featuring 5 installments.

The titles of the book written by the original author, Warner, are:

  • The Boxcar Children
  • The Movie Star Mystery
  • Surprise Island
  • The Yellow House Mystery
  • Mystery Ranch
  • Mike’s Mystery
  • Blue Bay Mystery
  • The Woodshed Mystery
  • The Lighthouse Mystery
  • Mountain Top Mystery
  • Schoolhouse Mystery
  • Caboose Mystery

  • Snowbound Mystery
  • Tree House Mystery
  • Bicycle Mystery
  • Mystery in the Sand
  • Mystery Behind the Wall

The ghostwriters that wrote the later additions to this series worked hard to carry on Warner’s tone of voice so that she continued to live through the book’s series.

Later books feature a created by rather than a written by title, and Warner’s name still appears on the front of each book under created by.

The Boxcar Children Movies

There are two different Boxcar Children which have been as popular as the loved book series.

The first movie was released in 2014 and was called The Boxcar Children.

The story follows the starting storyline from the early books in the series with the children mysteriously appearing in a village and their efforts to transform an abandoned boxcar into their new home.

The movie had an impressive cast, with Martin Sheen voicing Grandfather Alden, J.K. Simmons voicing Dr. Moore, Joey King voicing Jessie, and others.

The second movie was released in 2018 and was called Boxcar Children: Surprise Island. The movie is also animated and brings these loved characters to life again years later.

The cast featured most of the group of famous actors that had been involved in the first film, with Martin Sheen once again voicing Grandfather Alden, and Joey King coming back again to voice Jessie.

The sequel follows the storyline of the Alden children spending the summer with their Grandfather on a private island. They meet a kind stranger who lives on the island.

The children uncover a mystery and the movie follows their efforts and adventures as they solve the mystery, following a similar format to the storyline most of the books followed.

Final Thoughts

The Boxcar Children series continues to grow and continues to capture the imagination and hearts of children with the loveable characters and exciting storylines featured in each book. The movie is also just as loved as the book series.

Warner’s legacy continues to live and the series has most definitely surpassed any expectations she may have had related to how successful the series would be and how long it would hold space in the children’s books market in the United States.
