Many of us grew up reading the Harry Potter books for hours upon hours, growing up alongside the characters themselves. There is a reason that these books remain relevant to this day, over 25 years since the first book’s release.

Which Harry Potter Book Is The Longest?

In this article, we will look at how many pages are in each of the Harry Potter books, and we will find out which one is the longest.

How Many Harry Potter Books Are There?

JK Rowling has been writing books based within the wizarding world of Harry Potter since 1997, when the first Harry Potter book was published.

Since the original series ended ten years later, in 2007, Rowling has released other published pieces, some of which are an extension of the magical world in which Harry Potter was based.

Some of these include:

  • ‘Harry Potter and The Cursed Child’ (2016), the two-part sequel centered around Harry Potter’s son, Albus Severus
  • ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ (2001), which inspired the more recent film franchise, starring Eddie Redmayne.

In the original franchise that follow Harry Potter’s life throughout his time at Hogwarts, however, there are seven books:

  1. ‘Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone’ (1997)
  2. ‘Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets’ (1998)
  3. ‘Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban’ (1999)
  4. ‘Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire’ (2000)
  5. ‘Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix’ (2003)
  6. ‘Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince’ (2005)
  7. ‘Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows’ (2007)

When Rowling wrote the first couple of books, they were fairly short and easy to read through within a short amount of time. They were primarily marketed towards children, so they were written to be shorter so that younger children would enjoy reading them.

As her audience grew up, along with Harry, Ron, and Hermione, the books became longer and longer. The content also became more mature with each book that was released, as the characters grew up, and faced more serious, ‘grown-up’ issues.

The Length Of Each Harry Potter Book (1-7)

Below, we have listed each of the seven books in the Harry Potter series, along with the pages numbers of each novel.

Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone (1997)

‘Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone’ (or, ‘The Philosopher’s Stone’) is the first book of the series, introducing 11-year-old Harry Potter as he set off for his first adventures at Hogwarts.

This first book contains 309 pages, making it quite short for your typical best-selling novel, but making it the perfect size for a children’s book

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets (1998)

‘Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets’ was released as little as a year after its predecessor. The main characters, including Harry, are still quite young in this book, and the maturity levels remain fairly low.

This second book contains only 32 pages more than ‘The Sorcerer’s Stone’, resulting in 341 pages altogether.

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban (1999)

‘Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban’ came out a year later, making it seem that Rowling was planning on releasing a new entry for the series every single year.

The third book contains 435 pages; almost 100 pages longer than its predecessor.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire (2000)

‘Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire’ is known by many to be the turning point of the series. This is when the plot becomes notably darker, and the characters are forced to grow up a little faster.

The fourth book contains a whopping 734 pages, more than doubled in size compared to the first book.

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix (2003)

‘Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix’ came out 3 years following the release of ‘Goblet of Fire’, breaking Rowling’s 4-year streak of annual releases. The number of pages in this book, most likely, had something to do with this.

The fifth book contains 870 pages, making it one of the longest children/YA books ever written.

Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince (2005)

‘Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince’ came out two years later, continuing Harry’s story during his sixth year at Hogwarts.

The sixth book contains 652 pages, which is considerably shorter than the previous two entries in the series.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows (2007)

‘Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows’ is the final book of the Harry Potter series, wrapping up Harry’s journey into the magical world as a child.

The final book contains 759 pages.

Which Book Is The Longest?

Which Book Is The Longest?

So, to summarize our previous list, here is the order of the longest-to-shortest in the Harry Potter series:

  1. ‘Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix’ – 870 pages.
  2. ‘Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows’ – 759 pages.
  3. ‘Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire’ – 734 pages.
  4. ‘Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince’ – 652 pages.
  5. ‘Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban’ – 435 pages.
  6. ‘Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets’ – 341 pages.
  7. ‘Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone’ – 309 pages.

This means that the fifth entry of the series, ‘The Order of The Phoenix’, is the longest Harry Potter book. The novel contains 257,045 pages altogether.

Strangely enough, despite the fact that it is the longest book in the series, ‘Order of The Phoenix’ is the shortest movie adaptation at only 2 hours and 18 minutes.

Many fans felt cheated when they found out that many aspects of the novel had been cut out of the movie adaptation.

This was especially true due to the amount of content that could have been added if the run time had been extended.

The longest movie adaptation was ‘Chamber of Secrets’, at 2 hours and 54 minutes, despite the fact that this book contained 529 pages less content than ‘Order of The Phoenix’.

Depending on the reader, it may take different amounts of time to completely finish reading ‘Order of The Phoenix’.

Some people have managed to finish the novel within 12-24 hours, whereas others needed over 2 weeks.

It is a very large book, but it has been rated one of the best books in the entire series.

Final Thoughts

Out of the seven books in the original Harry Potter series, it is ‘Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix’ that is the longest, containing a massive 870 pages, and 257,045 words.

That is over double the amount of pages in the first book of the series, and 111 pages longer than the second-longest book, ‘Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows’.
