Looking to get into reading? Maybe you’re looking for something simple that you can pick up and put down at ease, or maybe you’re just wanting to get someone to read after they’ve said they dislike reading altogether.

Books For People Who Don’t Like To Read

In this article we’ll be going over some of the best books for people that don’t like reading much, and we’ll be discussing some of the advantages of getting into reading. Without further ado let’s get started.

Benefits Of Reading

Reading can help you to develop loads of different things at all ages, reading can:

  • teach you that there are many ways to approach life;
  • Enhances your social skills as you get familiar with different social scenarios;
  • Helps you to learn;
  • Gives you better communication skills as your vocabulary and usage of grammar increase;
  • Stimulates your mental health;
  • puts you in a better mood and relaxes your mind; and
  • helps you to sleep if you have the habit of reading before bedtime.
  • Allows you to practice your cognitive skills

Now let’s take a look at some books that are perfect for those of us that don’t like to read.

Genre Fiction

Whilst it may seem obvious. Reading anything that’s considered as genre fiction, or popular fiction is always going to be great for you, as you know exactly what to expect from the book that you choose.

Genre fiction is written with the intent of fitting into a specific literary genre, in order to appeal to readers and fans already familiar with that genre.

This can include anything from sci-fi to horror, romance or even children’s books. So the best thing to do is search through whatever particular genre that you’re interested in, and select a book that appeals to you.

Rather than leaving you in the dark though, here’s a few examples:

  • Detective fiction: Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie
  • Horror Fiction: Coraline by Neil Gaiman
  • Sci-fi Fiction:  Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card
  • Romance Fiction: The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

Harry Potter

Wherever you’re from in the world, Harry Potter is a name you probably know quite well regardless of your interest to read. The series of books are some of the best selling in the history of literature, let alone the fantasy genre, and that’s clearly for good reason.

J.K Rowling wrote Harry Potter with a target audience of children, and young adults, but Harry Potter can be read by anyone, especially if they’re a fan of the fantasy genre.

It’s extremely easy to pick up and read, and the movies are so massively popular that even if you stumble on some sections of the books, if you’ve seen the movies then you’ll probably have a fairly good understanding of what’s going on at all times anyway.

There’s so much to read here too! If you’re someone that dislikes books, then finding one that you like and continuing with a specific author can be a great way of getting into more complex books, whilst still remaining familiar with that particular author’s style of writing.

J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter books become noticeably darker and more serious as the series progresses, so you can really see how the style of writing remains the same, but with different content.

If you’re a fan of fantasy but dislike reading, then Harry Potter is a great option to give reading a go.

Short Stories

Maybe for you, reading is a chore. Maybe reading takes up too much time, or you simply can’t get invested enough in a story that you keep coming back to the same book.

If any of these are the case, then reading books that house a collection of short stories, rather than a more traditional, single story can be a great way to get into literature and books rather than just reading one long story.

Short stories are great too, and come in a variety of different sizes all the way from 5,000 to 7,000 words.

That might seem like a lot, but in reality that’s only roughly 18 pages, easy for a single sitting, and there’s no shortage in quality here, short stories can leave lasting effects on you just in the same way that a larger piece of literature might.

Overall, collections of short stories into one larger book are more common than you might think, and many large authors like Steven King and J.K Rowling have collections of short stories that are fantastic.

Whatever your preference for genre or author, there’s short stories of all types, so take a look for yourself!

Animal Farm

You might want something darker still, maybe you’re not a fan of reading, but want something that gives you the opportunity to think outside of the box, or draw parallels from other things in life.

Whatever your thoughts, George Orwell’s Animal Farm is a novella that hits hard.

As an allegory to the rise of totalitarianism in Russia, this story follows an animal farm where the animals unite to overthrow the humans that are in charge.

When problems arise afterwards that make you question if the tyrannical humans in charge were the real problem, you can’t help but ponder over every single word.

This is by no means a simple book, but if you’re someone that’s not thrilled by some of the other options on this list, then Animal Farm is sure to get your brain ticking overtime!

Final Thoughts

Overall, there’s not enough space here to write about all the amazing books you can read.

The list is almost endless, and the joy of reading is that you get to explore these stories however you like. So don’t be afraid to give reading a go.
