For some, reading is a part of everyday life, it’s easy to get addicted to escaping into a world that a book can take you to, whether that be a fictional world.
Or one that’s set in the world we live in, reading can truly transport you to a different world, and can give you a fresh set of eyes on the world. But is reading considered a hobby?
In this article we’ll be breaking down what a hobby is, and answering if reading really is a hobby or not. So without further ado let’s get started.
What Is A Hobby?
A hobby is considered to be a regular activity that is done for enjoyment, typically during one’s leisure time. Hobbies include collecting themed items and objects, engaging in creative and artistic pursuits, playing sports, or pursuing other amusements.
Participation in hobbies encourages acquiring substantial skills and knowledge in that area. Hobbies can range from anything, all the way from something like writing, or as eccentric as rock climbing, and the point of a hobby is to have fun!
So long as you enjoy whatever it is that you pass your time with, you could more or less consider it as a hobby.
Is Reading A Hobby?
So now that we know what a hobby is, we can answer the question, ‘is reading a hobby’. The answer of course is yes!
Whatever it is that you enjoy doing in your free time you can quite easily call a hobby, and this can be as wild or as mundane as you like, the beauty is that whatever it is you choose to spend your free time doing you can consider a hobby, athletics?
Sure, flying? Sure, stamp collecting? Sure, reading? Absolutely.
Habit Vs. Hobby
Whilst reading can absolutely be considered as a hobby, many readers find themselves reading out of habit instead of as a hobby, for example, if you find yourself reading before you sleep every night, and can’t sleep without reading then you’ve most probably picked up a reading habit.
This is by no means a bad thing of course, but it’s interesting to see the difference between habit and hobby, as a hobby is something that you do whenever you have free time, and habit is something that you’d do unconditionally out of the merit of including it in your everyday routine.
This might seem confusing, but if you found yourself reading out of routine instead of enjoying reading itself, you might find that you’re reading out of habit instead of a hobby.
Reading As A Hobby
Reading as a hobby can provide loads of extra benefits to your everyday life too, it’s often regarded as a smart hobby, and one that’s quite sophisticated.
So why is this? Let’s go through a few reasons why reading as a hobby can be really beneficial for you.
Helps To Develop Social Skills
The habit of reading is one of the best habits you can possess. Books can really be your best friend. As a “friend,” reading
- assists you with character building as it teaches you that there are many ways to approach life;
- enhances your social skills as you get familiar with different social scenarios;
- adds knowledge, whether you read fiction or nonfiction;
- gives you better communication skills as your vocabulary and usage of grammar increase;
- develops and stimulates your mental health;
- puts you in a better mood and relaxes your mind; and
- helps you to sleep if you have the habit of reading before bedtime.
Improves Memory And Cognitive Abilities
The fact that reading improves memory and cognitive ability makes reading a very good habit for kids and adults alike.
Not only does it improve children’s brain power, but it also improves their vocabulary for all of their life, and the same goes for adults too!
A study by Anne Hargrave of the Carleton University, Ontario, Canada revealed that preschool children with limited vocabularies acquired new vocabulary from book-reading episodes. You can read more about it here.
The Expense Of Reading
Reading as a hobby is actually quite inexpensive too, although you sometimes buy a book you want to keep, you can utilize your local library and read as many books as you wish at no cost.
Some libraries charge a small registration or annual fee, but most are absolutely free. Book shops also often have discounted sections, and will sell books for relatively cheap.
Owning a collection of books can be a really nice thing too, having a bookshelf that holds all of the books you love is a great way to spice up where you live and is a great way of immortalizing everything that you’ve read.
As well as this there’s no adding to your energy bill when reading in the daytime. And if you read at night all you need is a tiny LED light.
All you need is your book too, you can read on a plane, in a forest, out at sea or wherever on the planet. It’s one of the most convenient hobbies available to you, so why not just give it a go?

Finding yourself addicted to reading is something truly magical, and finding a story that you particularly love, where the pages flick through themselves is a great feeling, and one that you should definitely give a go to search for.
