The Drizzt series is a fantasy series that was written by R. A. Salvatore. The first book was written in 1988 and as of today, books in the series are still being written!
There are quite a few books in this series, and their publication dates are not necessarily written in their chronological order, so you might be a bit confused about where to start and in what order you should read them.
Luckily though, we’ve got you covered! We will be going over exactly how many books there are currently and what order you should be reading them in!
What Are The Drizzt Books About?
The Drizzt series follows the adventures of the protagonist, Drizzt Do’Urden. The books are set in the Forgotten Realms in the realm of Abeir-Toril on the continent of Faerûn, which is the setting for the widely popular tabletop RPG game Dungeons & Dragons.
Most of the books are separated into trilogies and focus on Drizzt Do’Urden, a Ranger Drow (or Dark Elf), and his support for other characters as they venture around Abeir-Toril.
Drizzt as a character has become widely popular among both readers of the series and Dungeons & Dragons fans.
Along with appearing in most of the Drizzt series, he has also appeared in D&D-based video games, such as Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone and the Baldur’s Gate Series.
How Many Drizzt Books Are There?
So how many books are there in the Drizzt Series? Well, the short answer is 37, with another on the way.
This may seem quite daunting if you haven’t read any of them yet, but these books are highly enjoyable to read and once you get started you won’t want to stop! They can also be broken down into trilogies to make reading and managing them a whole lot easier.
The Dark Elf Trilogy
The Dark Elf Trilogy consists of the books Homeland, Exile, and Sojourn. They tell the story of Drizzt Do’Urden from the time he is born right up until he becomes a skilled swordsman, which is present in the other books. The Dark Elf Trilogy serves as a bit of a prequel to the rest of the Drizzt series.
The Icewind Dale Trilogy
The Icewind Dale Trilogy consists of The Crystal Shard, Streams of Silver, and The Halfling’s Gem. They follow the story of Drizzt Do’Urden, the barbarian warrior Wulfgar, the halfling Regis, dwarf king Bruenor, and Cattie-brie, the adopted daughter of the dwarven king.
The Legacy of the Drow Quartet
The Legacy of the Drow series consists of the books The Legacy, Starless Night, Siege of Darkness, and Passage to Dawn. They continue the adventures of Drizzt Do’Urden.
Paths of Darkness
The Paths of Darkness series consists of The Silent Blade, The Spine of the World, Servant of the Shard, and Sea of Swords. Servant of the Shard was later moved to The Sellswords Trilogy.
The Sellswords Trilogy
The Sellswords Trilogy consists of Servants of the Shard (which was originally in the Paths of Darkness trilogy), Promise of the Witch-King, and Road of the Patriarch. This trilogy focuses on the story of Artemis Entreri, the self-proclaimed enemy of Drizzt Do’Urden.
Whereas the main characters in this trilogy are the antagonists of the other stories, they serve as the protagonists here.
The Hunter’s Blades Trilogy
The Hunter’s Blades Trilogy consists of The Thousand Orcs, The Lone Drow, and The Two Swords. They tell the story of Drizzt Do’Urden as he tries to stop an orc king from spreading chaos and starting a war.
Transitions Trilogy
The Transitions Trilogy consists of the books The Orc King, The Pirate King, and The Ghost King. This trilogy continues the story of Drizzt Do’Urden and his friends and companions.
Neverwinter Saga
The Neverwinter Saga consists of Gauntlgrym, Neverwinter, Charon’s Claw, and The Last Threshold. The first book, Gauntlgrym is set 24 years after the events of The Ghost King.
Sundering Book 1
The Sundering consists of one stand-alone book that is set right after the events of The Last Threshold. There are more books in this series, but we’ve only listed one here as it was the only one R. A. Salvatore actually wrote.
Companions Codex Trilogy
The Companions Codex Trilogy consists of The Companions (which is also Book 1 of The Sundering), Night of the Hunter, Rise of the King, and Vengeance of the Iron Dwarf.
Homecoming Trilogy
The Homecoming Trilogy consists of Archmage, Maestro, and Hero. It is set just after the Companions Codex Trilogy.
Generations Trilogy
The Generations Trilogy consists of the books Timeless, Boundless, and Relentless. They continue the story of Drizzt Do’Urden.
The Way of the Drow
And finally, The Way of the Drow is the latest series within the overall Drizzt books. There is currently only one book in this series, Starlight Enclave. More books are being written for this series, but they haven’t been published or released yet, so when you do get to The Way of the Drow, you’ll have more to read soon!
