During the Hunger Games, a reaping would occur before the events took place. This ceremony would decide who would be selected as a tribute from each of Panem’s 12 districts.

What Is The Reaping In The Hunger Games?

In this article, we will look deeper into what a reaping is, how it happened, and why it came to be.

So, let’s get into it.

What is The Reaping?

The reaping ceremony took place prior to each Hunger Games. During the ceremony, two ‘tributes’ would be chosen from each of the 12 districts to compete in the Hunger Games.

An escort would be sent from the Capitol to attend each district’s reaping. The escort would then stand on a stage before each district, and pull two names out of two glass balls in front of the audience; the name of a boy, and the name of a girl.

The two individuals whose names were picked would participate in the forthcoming Hunger Games.

The Full History of The Reaping

When contemporary society collapsed, the nation of Panem was first founded. It was agreed that Panem would be divided into 13 districts and a Capitol as this nation expanded throughout North America, gaining significant territory and population.

Panem and its numerous districts were unfairly ruled by the government, which oppressed the populace and showed preferential treatment to those who resided in the Capitol.

The First Rebellion

The 13 districts finally rebelled against the Capitol as a result of this partiality, leading to a revolution. This sparked the First Rebellion, a war that raged throughout Panem.

On both sides of the conflict, many people lost their lives. The Capitol, in particular, faced immense devastation, with families having to resort to rationing food and selling their personal belongings to survive.

The rebels from the 13 districts made an effort to take over the Capitol at the end of the uprising. In the end, this strategy was a failure, and the Capitol ultimately regained power. The Capitol emerged victorious after a protracted battle between the two sides.

The Treaty of Treason

District 13 collapsed and was abandoned following the Capitol’s victory. The Treaty of Treason was then implemented on the remaining 12 districts.

The Treaty of Treason was a treaty signed to ensure peace between the districts and the Capitol following the First Rebellion.

The Treaty placed a series of limitations on the districts that significantly restricted personal freedoms, such as limiting inter-district movement and interaction, as well as escalating monitoring and discipline.

Additionally, it debuted the annual Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games was an event created to remind the remaining districts of their previous crimes against the Capitol, and to ensure that these events would never happen again.

The Hunger Games required each district to select two ‘tributes’ to compete in a battle royale inside a manufactured arena within the Capitol. To qualify, the tributes needed to be between the ages of 12-18.

Only one child would survive in the end, since each tribute would have to fight to the death.

In order to choose which children would be chosen to compete in the Hunger Games, a reaping would take place.

Every child between the ages of 12 and 18 would get nominated, and at the reaping, the mayor of each district would pick two names out of two glass balls; one boy, one girl. This way, the reaping would be completely fair.

Fixing Biased Reapings (10th Hunger Games Onwards)

For the first 9 Hunger Games, the mayor of each district would be in charge of picking the tributes’ names.

This changed at the 10th Hunger Games’ reaping, in which the mayor of District 12 rigged to select the female competitor as Lucy Gray Baird, a rival of his daughter.

The guidelines were altered after this. The Capitol began sending unbiased escorts into each district to carry out the reapings, after the 10th Hunger Games, to guarantee that no unjust partiality occurred.

The Reaping: A Complete Guide

The Rules of The Reaping

Each district’s children of the right age would assemble in front of the stage, in front of the Capitol’s designated escort, for the reaping.

Each child would be numbered and given a microchip to confirm their attendance.

With each year a child gets older, their name would be added to the reaping an extra time.

For example, once a child turned 12-years-old, their name would be added to the reaping for the first time, and would only be added once.

The following year, when they turned 13, their name would be added twice, and so on, so forth.

Volunteering as Tribute

Once each boy and girl’s names had been chosen, there would be an opportunity for other children to volunteer as tribute.

In the first Hunger Games novel, Katniss Everdeen volunteered to take the place of her younger sister, Prim, to protect her from the games.

In other instances, certain children would volunteer purely because it was viewed as an honor to fight in the Hunger Games.

This would often happen in the Career districts, as their children would train throughout the year specifically to fight in the games.

Applying For Tessera

Once their first child reached the required age to participate in the Hunger Games, families in each district were eligible to apply for tessera.

For a single person, a single tessera of grain and oil was equal to one year’s worth of consumption. Additional tesserae could be claimed by the child for as many relatives as necessary.

In exchange for this extra source of food, the child’s name would need to be added to the reaping balls an extra time.

This meant that the child would be more likely to get picked as a tribute during the annual reaping.

The Quarter Quells

Every 25 years, the Hunger Games would celebrate a Quarter Quell. This would change up the way the reaping would take place.

For the 25th Hunger Games, each district could vote for the children they wanted to be chosen as tribute.

In the 50th Hunger Games, four tributes were chosen from each district—two boys, two girls—instead of the usual two.

In the 75th, the tributes were chosen from the surviving victors of each district.

Final Thoughts

The method of the Hunger Games required a reaping. A reaping would have to be conducted in order to fairly select the children who would be nominated as tributes for the Hunger Games each year.

The older the child, the more likely they were to get reaped. Their odds were also affected by other factors, including whether their family wanted to apply for tessera.
