Books stands are something that every book lover needs to have. They are incredibly handy for keeping your book upright when you can’t use your hands. 

However, instead of purchasing a book stand, you can easily make one yourself. In this guide, we are going to walk you through the steps on how to make a book stand. 

What You Need To Make A Book Stand

Before we look at the steps to making a book stand, we need to know the tools and supplies you will need in order to make the book stand. 

Required Tools

Here is a list of all of the tools you must have in order to make this book stand:

• Power Drill 
• Small Cobalt Drill Bit (5/64”)
• Handsaw – This is so you can cut the wood but your preferred tool to cut wood will also work. 
• Sandpaper
• Wood Glue

Non-Compulsory Tools

Here is a list of tools that are optional as you do not need them to complete this book stand:

• Electric Sander – If you already have one then you can use it instead of the sandpaper, but it is not necessary to buy a new one as the sandpaper will work. 
• Wood Stain – This is completely your choice to stain your wood for decoration. 
• Cloth and Paintbrush  – These would be needed if you are going to stain the wood.

Equipment

Here is a list of supplies you will need to make this book stand:

• Wood – 9×13 inch rectangle, 12×1.5 inch shelf, two 5x7x9 inch triangles, two 9×1 inch boards, two 11×1 inch pieces.
• Small Washers
• Small Wood Screws – Four 3/8inch screws work well. 
• Hinges – Seven small hinges. 

Steps For Making A Book Stand

Now that we know what you need to make a book stand, here are the steps to making one. 

Step One

The first thing you need to do in order to to make a book stand is to cut the wood.

Of course,  if you have purchased your wood so it has been cut to the size you need you can skip this step. 

When it comes to cutting the wood, you need to cut out a rectangle that is 9×13 inches. This is where the book will rest when you are using the book stand. 

Then you need to cut the 12×1.5 inch shelf. This is what the book will rest on so that it stands on the book stand. Make sure that the edges of the shelf are curved. 

Then it is time to cut the extra pieces of wood. Cut two 9×1 inch boards which will go along the sides of the back of the book stand. Then cut two 11×1 inch pieces of wood for support. 

Lastly, cut your two 9x5x7 inch triangles. These are going to be what makes your book stand stay up. 

Sand all of the edges. During this step you should also stain your wood if you plan on decorating it. 

Step Two

Now it is time to start attaching the frame to the back of the board. 

To do this you need to place your 9×13 inch rectangle piece of wood with the front facing down.

After, you need to gather up all of the frame pieces of wood. These are all of the pieces of wood, except the 12×1.5 inch shelf. 

Then you need to lay these pieces of wood in place. So the two 9×1 inch pieces of wood should be placed on each side of the rectangular board.

To make this clearer, the 9×1 inch pieces of wood will be flush with the 9 inch side of the rectangular wood. 

After these are in place, you need to lay down the two 11×1 inch pieces of wood. These pieces of wood will be laid horizontally on the board.

One piece will be at the top of the rectangular board and the other piece will be in the middle of the board.

The two triangles should sit flush against the 9×1 inch pieces on the inside of them. 

Once you are happy with where everything is sitting, you need to remove the triangles and then glue down all of the other pieces you have placed on the board.

Then to ensure they are secure, screw each piece to the 9×13 inch board but make sure the screws do not poke through the front. 

Step Three

Now you can work on getting the front ready by attaching the shelf to the front of the 9×13 inch board. 

Take three hinges and mark where you want them to be on your main board. Then screw slowly into the small side of your 12×1.5 inch shelf.

This is the hardest part of the project. Once you have made your holes, attach one end of the hinge to the shelf. 

To check that the hinge is in the correct position, when closed or folded, this piece of wood should sit flush against the main rectangular board.

Repeat this process with all of the hinges. 

Lastly, keep the hinges folded and place against your main board in the place you want the shelf to be.

Then mark the screw holes and screw the hinges into this board. 

Step Four

Place the book stand so the front is down. 

Choose where you want the hinges to be on the sides of the triangles then attach one side of the hinges on the triangle. 

Line the triangle up with the 9×1 inch pieces and screw the hinges into place on the frame. When you fold the hinges, the triangles should come out at a 90 degree angle.
