In the last 10 or so years, technology has improved so much that everything is so much easier, and reading online is one of those things.

After just a simple google search and a few clicks we can read enormous amounts of stories online.

But sometimes at the end of the day, nothing truly beats having a physical book in your hands.

It’s inexplicable, but being able to hold a book in your hands whilst reading is a truly magnificent thing, and with prices rising it gets harder and harder to do that every year.

Sometimes it’s just difficult to justify paying the price of a good book.

If being able to try out books without immediately having to buy them is something that interests you, then Literati might be for you.

In this article we’ll be going over what Literati is, and answering once and for all if it’s worth it, so let’s get started.

What Is Literati?

Literati is a subscription service that acts as a hybrid bookseller, curator, and book-club aggregator.

Not only does it give kids and adults new books to try before they buy and access to a reading community, but it also works with charities to facilitate book donations and get quality reading material to people who otherwise can’t afford it.

In its 5 years Literati has worked with numerous highly regarded charities.

Literati initially began as a book service for children that allowed parents to sign up for a monthly subscription of $10.

They’d then receive a weekly delivery of 5 different books that are tailored to their child, surrounded by a different theme that changed every month.

The children would have a week to read them, and work out if they wanted to buy any of the books that they had been given, any that they didn’t want would be sent back to Literati completely free of charge. 

As Literati has continued to grow and expand, they began offering their services towards adults too, with a similar monthly or annual subscription that you could pay in order to try out a new book every month.

These books were chosen by each of the 12 ‘Luminaries’ that have their own community within Literati and subscribers can choose whichever luminaries that they wish to follow, the book that they receive is dependent on whichever luminaries they follow.

Subscribers can then discuss the book, or any literature they like on Literati’s online forums, which really gives a sense of community to the whole company.

In fact, Literati aims to be the main network that people use to discuss the literature that they love, and by providing lesser known authors and pieces of literature that people otherwise wouldn’t have heard of, they can really give their subscribers new and interesting bits of writing to talk about!

Customer Reviews

As is with any service, a great indicator of how effective it is is by looking at customer reviews on how they thought the service went.

On their company website they received an impressive score of 4.8 out of 5 stars, with reviewers being really happy over their deliveries, and impressed with the selection of books that are available for both children and adults.

As you could imagine, social media is a relatively different story, with there being many more complaints which largely seem to be disappointed at some of the selections of books offered to teenagers that use the service, and issues with canceling and refunding deliveries before they arrive.

There are happy customers though, that continue to praise Literati for their choice of books and speedy delivery both to and from your house.

Overall, there’s mixed opinions on the service, and whilst some customers are unhappy, there are relatively more that seem to enjoy the service, and continue using it for years. 

Worth It?

Overall, Literati is a relatively inexpensive option to get children more involved with reading, and a more expensive but fair service for adults too.

If you’re looking for a service that you can subscribe to for your child to read more, then Literati is excellent.

For $10 a month and loads of different options you’ll definitely be satisfied with your subscription. 

When it comes to adults, the same is the case really, with the price being doubled to $20 a month, you’re going to be expecting more benefits, and you really do.

If you’re someone that loves discussing literature too then being able to chat with people all over the world about something you’ve read recently is fantastic, and really makes up for that extra money you’ll be spending every month instead of the children’s service. 

If you’re not interested in the forums though, or maybe don’t read too much.

Maybe this service isn’t for you. $20 a month still isn’t bad for a hand selected book that you can read every month, but unless you’re consistently reading, then you won’t be able to take advantage of the time that you’re given to read the book before you’ve got to return it.

In saying that though, the recommendations are great, the discussions are fascinating, and you can really select exactly what it is that you’d like to read every month, so you’d find it hard to not see the benefits from this service.

With its excellent donation system and charitable contributions too, you can feel good about signing up with Literati, as you know they like to give back too. So why not give it a go?
