Since being released in 2007, Amazon’s portable electronic reading device, the Kindle, has become hugely popular. There are now six different versions of the Kindle and more are sure to come.

Kindles can range anywhere from $90 to nearly $150 and this leads many people to ask the question of whether they are really worth it or not?

Is A Kindle Worth It?

When you buy a Kindle there are additional costs to purchase books and this may make it seem like a very pricy way to enjoy a good book.

Here we look at several reasons why a Kindle is worth it, as well as a few reasons why some people ultimately don’t like these small reading devices. If you want to find out more, keep reading below!

Reasons Why A Kindle Is Worth It

1. Incredible Storage

Kindles give you the ability to accumulate a digital library with hundreds of books and as Kindle continues to get more popular more and more books are becoming available as eBooks.

You can also convert other file types and save them as eBooks on your Kindle which can be a great way of reducing the need to print and carry around PDFs among other files.

2. Compact And Portable

Carrying a book can take up a lot of space, with a Kindle you can slip it into any sized bag and due to its lightweight and compact size, you won’t even realize it is there.

This is a huge reason why people who travel a lot and can’t always carry books decide to purchase a Kindle.

3. eBooks Are Cheap

eBooks are considerably cheaper than purchasing a paperback or hard copy of your favorite book. There are also a number of books that are available for free to Kindle users, such as a lot of literary classics.

While a Kindle does have an initial upfront cost you will save money over time by purchasing eBooks rather than physical books.

4. Great Price

Kindles are very reasonably priced considering they are electronic devices. Different models will have different price points but you can get a Kindle for as little as $90.

As Kindles have been around for a number of years now it is possible to purchase refurbished or second-hand Kindles online which again makes this product more accessible financially.

5. Access To Local Libraries

Some local libraries have set up virtual Kindle libraries where members can borrow books for a certain period of time. After this period has elapsed the book is removed from the loaner’s device.

This is only available for Kindle owners in the US currently but due to its popularity it is expected to filter into other countries over the next number of years.

6. Share Libraries With Family And Friends

Kindle has a fantastic feature called the loan feature which enables you to loan a book from your Kindle library to a family member or friend for 14 days.

This is a great way of passing on books to others, even if it isn’t a physical copy.

7. Great Features

There are lots of great features that can be found on different models of the Kindle. Some of the most favored features include:

  • Night Mode
  • Adjustable screen warmth and brightness
  • Adjustable font size
  • Backlighting strength
  • Ability to add annotations
  • Option to bookmark certain pages

These features are a huge reason why Kindles continue to boom in popularity.

Reasons Why The Kindle Might Not Be Worth It

Reasons Why The Kindle Might Not Be Worth It

While there is a lot to like about Kindles there are also some things that put people off buying them, we look at some of these main reasons below.

1. Slow Operating

Some of the older models of Kindles can be quite slow, they are not as capable as other smart devices at going between different tasks and pages and this can be frustrating to people as with regular books there is no waiting necessary, just maybe for an author to release a new book.

Newer models are considerably faster but they are still not yet caught up with the instant loading that you can find on any smart phone or device.

2. Just Not The Same

Some people love the feeling of opening a book to the first page, enjoying that new book smell, and feeling the pages as they delve into a new story. With Kindles, you don’t have that. You tap the side of the screen and wait for the next page to load.

If you are the type of person who likes to highlight and make notes, there are features that allow you to do this on the Kindle.

But then anytime you want to reference back to these moments of importance you need to go to your Kindle, open the eBook and go through all of the notes and highlights that you made.

3. Don’t Forget To Charge!

With a regular book, you don’t need to worry about a battery running out of charge but one thing that frustrates Kindle users is that they may be enjoying their book, and all of a sudden the battery goes.

If you buy a Kindle you need to keep an eye on the battery so that this doesn’t happen, and of course, this can sometimes slip a person’s mind.

Final Thoughts

Whether a Kindle is worth it or not depends on the individual.

If the reasons why we think it’s worth it sounded good to you then purchasing a Kindle may be a good idea for you but if you were more drawn to the reasons why the Kindle might not be worth it then it might not be right for you.

Many Kindle owners do sometimes still buy physical books as a digital library can’t fill a set of bookshelves but this may only be for special editions or books of importance to them.

There is no doubt that the Kindle has completely transformed the world of reading and given people choice as to how they read when on the go or traveling.
